Chapter 2 Projects

 PROJECT 2-1: Using the System Information Utility (System Information)

A. What OS and OS version are you using? Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit

B. What is your CPU speed? 1.60 GHz

C. What is your BIOS manufacturer and version?

System Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packward & BIOS: F.34, 07/27/2011

D. How much video Ram is available to your video adapter card? Explain how you got this information?

Memory: 3072MB RAM and I found this information under System Information.

E. What is the name of the driver file that manages your parallel port? Your USB Ports?

usbport.sys, Location: c:\windows\system32\drivers\usbport.sys

A. What OS and OS version are you using? Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit

Memory: 3072MB RAM and I found this information under Fresh Diagnose.

E. What is the name of the driver file that manages your parallel port? Your USB Ports?

usbport.sys, Location: c:\windows\system32\drivers\usbport.sys

 (Both programs give me the same information but Fresh Diagnose gives me more detailed information than System Information.)

 PROJECT 2-2: Using a Freeware Diagnostic Utility

A. Which utility is easier to use and why?

In my opinion System Information is easier to use than Fresh Diagnose. System Information is less complicated to use and has less detailed information than Fresh Diagnose.

B. Which utility gives more information about your system?

I believe Fresh Diagnose gives more information and has more options than Systems Information.

C. What is one advantage that System Information has over Fresh Diagnose?

It doesn't require Installation and comes with most computers now a days.

D. What is one advantage that fresh Diagnose has over System Information?

It would save time finding problems with the network and the Network Information it pulls together.

E. Which utility do you prefer and why?

I'd prefer to learn Fresh Diagnose because I believe it would give me more detailed information over System Information.

 PROJECT 2-3: Using the Taskbar

1. List the items in the quick Launch area of the taskbar. What is the program name and path of each item?

2. List the items in the notification area (system tray) of the taskbar. Don't forget to list the items hidden in this area. Investigate and describe the purpose of each program.

3. Move the taskbar from the bottom of the screen to the left side. List the steps you took to do that.

Right click the taskbar and go to properties. Then uncheck the lock taskbar and click on the scroll down screen "left". Then click apply and click "Ok".

4. If you are using a Vista computer, press Win+Tab and describe the results. Are you using the Vista Aero User interface?

No but I can still explain the results. What happens is that it just cycles through Open Programs.


PROJECT 2-4: Practicing Keystrokes

1. Open Explorer and display the files in the root directory of drive C. List the steps and keystrokes you used to do this.

Click on Windows Explorer, then click Computer, and then click the C:\ Drive and that is the start of the Root Directory.

2. Unhide all the files in this folder. From the Tools menu, Folder Options, select the View tab, and then select Show hidden files and folders. Also uncheck Hide extensions for the known file types and uncheck Hide protected operating system files. List the steps of keystrokes you used.

On Windows 7 in the Root Directory click organize, folder and search options, click the view tab, select the Show hidden files, folders, and drives. Then right click the hidden files properties and uncheck hidden under the general tab.

3. What is the exact size of the file Pagefile.sys in bytes, and the date and time the file was last modified.

The size is 2.60 GB, the date it was created was 11/5/2011, and the last date it was modified was 8/29/2012 8:16 PM. Since I went in to the virtual memory and changed it a little.


PROJECT 2-5: Using Windows Explorer

1. Open Windows Explorer.

2. Create a folder under the root directory of the hard drive of the hard drive called \Temp. List the steps you took.

I went in to the Root Directory and right clicked new to create a new folder named Temp.

3. Add a subfolder to \temp called \Myfiles. List the steps you took.

I clicked in to temp folder and right clicked in the Root Directory again to create a new folder named Myfiles.

4. Create a text file in the MyFiles folder named Text1.txt. List the steps you took.

I clicked in to the Myfiles folder inside the Temp folder of the Root Directory. Then I right clicked to click new, and I created a text document named Text1.

5. Create a shortcut to that folder on the Windows desktop. List the steps you took.

I right clicked the text file and click create a shortcut. I then cut and pasted it to the desktop.

6. Rename the file Text2.txt.

7. Double-click the shortcut on the desktop. What error did you get?

Well I renamed the text document inside the Root Directory. Since I did that the shortcut on the desktop still worked but the name of the text file was different because I changed it.

8. To clean up after yourself, delete the \Temp folder and the shortcut.
